Genetic issues West Highland White Terriers

West Highland White Terriers, Westies, as they are affectionately known, are generally robust and long-lived little dogs.  Like all purebred dogs, they do have predispositions to specific health conditions. Responsible pet ownership, including regular vet check-ups, a balanced diet, and a healthy environment, can help manage these risks and ensure a happy, active life for your Westie.

Common genetic health concerns

Westies are prone to allergies that can cause itchy, inflamed skin, which can lead to secondary infections if not managed properly. Regular grooming, high-quality hypoallergenic diets, and vet guidance can help keep their skin healthy.

They are known to have Craniomandibular Osteopathy (CMO). This is an inherited condition that affects the bones of the jaw and skull, typically in young Westies. While painful, it usually resolves by adulthood. Pain management and vet support can ease discomfort during growth phases.

Patellar luxation, a common issue in small dogs, occurs when the kneecap slips out of place. Mild cases can be managed with weight control and joint supplements, while more severe cases may require surgery.

While these conditions may sound concerning, proactive care can significantly improve your Westie’s well-being. We will add here that in the 20 years of breeding West Highland White Terriers at Brandywine, we have not experienced any of these issues in our bloodlines.

Preventative care

At Brandywine, we advocate for preventative care.  Owners who ensure a healthy lifestyle for their dog with the support of a trusted vet will enjoy long, joyful, and active companionship from their Westie.  Routine vet visits and a healthy diet of high-quality food with essential nutrients to support the dog’s immune system, joint health, and skin condition play a significant part in the well-being of your Westie. Proper exercise and weight management combined with regular brushing and grooming and you give your Westie the best conditions in which to thrive.
